Austin Newcomers President’s Letter

September 2024

September in Austin is still hot, but it’s getting a little cooler as fall is ushered in. You’ll need to be ready for all kinds of weather, so don’t put away your sunscreen or hats just yet. And keep your umbrella handy for those sudden showers or thunderstorm. Lightning in the Austin area can put on quite a show!

There is still plenty of time to enjoy a hike with Hearty Hikers or Happy Trails Interest Groups or take a cool dip in the Barton Springs Pool or check out the kayaks on Lady Bird Lake.         You won’t be disappointed.

If you are looking for indoor activities, check out the Members Calendar to sign up for one of our other great Interest groups, book clubs and games abound! There is always something fun going on with Austin Newcomers.

If you want to try something uniquely Austin, check out the Bat Fest September 7th on the Congress St. Bridge. There will be music, arts & crafts and food. Did you know that Austin hosts about 2 million bats under the bridge every spring and summer? They fly out to dine on mosquitoes and insects every night. So if you can’t make it to the festival, you can enjoy the show in March through October almost any evening around dusk, either on the bridge or take a boat ride under the bridge to see this spectacular sight.

A little later in the month, we will have our September Member Luncheon with a guest speaker. The luncheon will be September 18th at Balcones Country Club. Be sure to RSVP on the Calendar no later than September 11. The cost is still only $40/person. Only credit cards (preferred) or checks will be accepted-no cash or last minute walk-ins. You will receive a confirmation by email when you register on the Calendar. Our speaker will be Bud Franck, an Austin architect. He will discuss Austin’s treasure trove of notable architecture both historic and modern. Don’t miss this opportunity to gather with friends, new and old, enjoy a delicious meal and learn about Austin architecture.

Since our wonderful club grows mostly by word of mouth, invite a friend, neighbor or anyone you just happen meet to check out our website Austinnewcomers.com and “Try 2 Events” to see what there is to do in the Austin Newcomers Club. Remember, you don’t have to be new to join! We welcome everyone!
