Austin Newcomers Club President’s Letter-May 2025

May is a wonderful time to experience the best of Austin—whether you’re a newcomer or a long-time resident. From outdoor adventures to cultural festivals, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy.  Although May is considered the rainiest month in Austin, the temperatures are mild.  The typical rainfall in May is 5 inches with temperatures of 66-84F, perfect for outdoor activities! Since we are still in drought, get out and dance in and celebrate the rain!  Don’t let it stop you from doing all the fun activities this month.

May also marks graduation season in Austin, with high schools and colleges celebrating students’ achievements. It’s a time to honor the hard work and dedication of students as they embark on new journeys. Also, don’t forget to honor your Mom or the Mom-like people that you know on Mothers’ Day May 11th.  If you need a gift for Mom, the Pecan Street Festival is celebrating its 50th anniversary on May 3 and 4, 2025.  Although it has relocated the venue to the Hill Country Galleria in Bee Cave, you will still find hundreds of vendors with handmade goods, food, music and kid-friendly activities

The Mexican free-tail bats are taking flight every night to eat up thousands mosquitoes and bugs.  Check them out by kayaks, guided boat tours or gather on the Congress Ave bridge to watch this spectacular show.

Austin Newcomers Club has its usual array of activities, so check out the Calendar and sign up for your favorites or try something new.  You are always welcome! Some activities may be affected by Memorial Day on Monday 26th.

The May Luncheon is May 21st , 11am-1pm at the  Balcones Country Club.  They always provide us with a delicious lunch, including tea, coffee and your dessert.  If you love animals, you won’t want to miss the speaker this month.  She is from the Austin Zoo and will share some of the animals’ fascinating histories.  RSVP on the Calendar by May 16th to reserve your seat. Hope to see you there.

Happy Spring,

Bev the Prez
