March President’s Letter
Welcome to spring in Austin! The weather is getting warmer, and the sun is shining. It’s a busy time for Austin and the Austin Newcomers Club (ANC). During the months of March and April you’ll have a wonderful opportunity to view and get a classic picture with the iconic Bluebonnets. You will see them everywhere-in fields , along the roadside and at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Sign up on the members only Calendar to enjoy the Blue Bonnets and nature’s pageantry with the Happy Trails hiking group on March 8th. It’s an easy walk with plenty of benches to rest along the way.
If you are more inclined to have that cowboy feeling, Austin Rodeo is March 14th-29th, with Pro Rodeo, BBQ, music and a carnival. In keeping with the cowboy feeling, the speaker at our March 19th Member Luncheon, Robb Kendrick, is a photographic artist specializing in cowboys. Along with this interesting talk, you will enjoy a delicious lunch at the Balcones Country Club. Be sure to register on the Calendar by March 12th to secure you seat!
There’s still more going on in Austin in March! SXSW (South by Southwest) is the convergence of tech, film, music and culture happening on March 7th-15th. Check their website for schedules and tickets. Or attend one of our movie groups-Cinema North and Cinema South to discuss a selected movie with other movie buffs.
You can always find something to do with the Austin Newcomers Club throughout March. We have so many diverse activities going on, just check the members only Calendar and register right on the Calendar! Try something new this month and meet new friends!
Our Club would be nothing without our wonderful volunteers! Members who volunteer to be on the Board of Directors and as Interest Group Chairs are the Heroes of the Club. During the month of March, you may receive a call from the Nominating Committee asking if you will help the Club stay lively by volunteering to take a position on the Board. If you don’t get a call, feel free to call to volunteer! Our Board of Directors is supposed to change every year, although some Board members opt stay on for 2 years. The open positions come with training by the previous position holder, and you will always have my support with any other help you may need. There is a commitment to attend the Board Meeting on the first Wednesday morning of the month and report any changes or issues related to your position, plus you get breakfast! We usually have only 6- 7 meetings a year as listed on the Member Calendar. So join this special group and be a Club Hero!
Happy Spring!
