Dear Newcomers,
I hope this finds y’all enjoying a wonderful summer! Even in toasty August, there is so much to enjoy here in Austin. From Blues on the Green in Zilker Park to the Long Center Summer Concerts, we are lucky to have plenty of terrific entertainment options close by. I know some of you may also be traveling, spending time with family, or getting kids ready for back-to-school.
August is also a wonderful time to connect with your fellow Austin Newcomers. At last count, we have 22 Interest Groups—each one volunteer-led, centered around a shared topic, and warmly open to all members. These groups are such a fun and easy way to meet new people, explore social and cultural events, try new restaurants, discuss movies, exchange ideas about books, and enjoy games together. And, of course, our Random Happenings group keeps things especially lively with delightful surprises, such as a cruise on Lady Bird Lake or a private tour of an internationally acclaimed art exhibit.
Our volunteer Interest Group leaders do so much behind the scenes: developing topics, scouting locations, posting dates and details on our website, and keeping us all informed about what is coming up. They are supported by JoAnn Schauf, Executive Board Member and Interest Group Chair. In a recent conversation, JoAnn shared how deeply she appreciates our Interest Group leaders and described them as the lifeblood of Austin Newcomers. She also warmly welcomes members to reach out if they would like to start a new Interest Group. Sharing a passion for activities such as game watching, floral arranging, playing music, crafting, or brewery hopping could be a wonderful start. If you have an idea for a new Interest Group, you will receive plenty of mentoring and support. A heartfelt thanks to all of our Interest Group leaders for the energy, creativity, and care you bring to our club.
Please try an Interest Group event that sounds appealing to you. Everyone is truly welcome and you might find discover new hobbies and friends to enjoy them with.
In closing, whether you are brand new to Austin Newcomers or have been part of our community for years, please know that your thoughts and ideas are always welcome. I would love to hear from you anytime about ways we can make membership even more meaningful, enjoyable, and connected. This Club is here for all of us, and I am so truly glad you belong.
