Austin Newcomers Club - Letter from the President

Hello Wonderful Austin Newcomer Members!

No doubt about it, I miss the Connecticut fall foliage! I always loved seeing the trees, especially the Maples and Oaks, blanketed in hues of Brilliant yellows and shades of orange, red and umber. Well, I have found a great substitute (without the frosty mornings, of course). Plan a long weekend or a day trip to Lost Maples State Natural Area, usually best in October or November. The children are back to school and football season has begun. Speaking of football, you cannot live in Austin and not love football. The Texas spirit is amazing. Whether you go to a “Friday Night Lights” high school game, or tailgate and experience the amazing atmosphere first hand at the UT stadium, you are in for great fun and lots of excitement.

Be sure to check out your Newcomers Welcome Mat. You are in for a treat. We have almost 50, yes 50, interest groups. If you like sports, we have our kayaking and hiking groups. Are you into game playing? We have many game playing groups: Bunco, Bridge, Scrabble, Mah Jongg, Golf, Canasta, Board Games Night and Ladies and Men’s Poker. Our adventure groups are a great way to get to meet new friends while getting to know more about Austin and the surrounding area. There is a Garden Group, Wannabe Gourmets, Happy Hour held at many of
Austin’s fabulous restaurants, International dining, Book Clubs, Critics Corner, Knit and Stitch just to name a few. There is something for everyone. Not interested in any of these—we encourage you to start a new group. The possibilities are endless. Just contact me, present
your idea to the Board and chances are a new group will emerge. Our group leaders are
awesome and spend many hours planning the activities to make sure a “good time is had by all”.

We have many exciting things planned for this year. So I hope you will become an integral part of our wonderful Club. Plan to attend the monthly luncheon/program on the third Wednesday of every month. We invite you to attend the monthly Board meetings on the
first Wednesday of every month. I especially encourage all of our Interest Group Chairs to attend. There is nothing mysterious about our Club. It is a great way to get to know what is going on in our Club and see just how all of the planning takes place. All are welcome!

So start looking for your perfect pumpkin and colorful mums. Keep a lookout for fall foliage Texas style. Enjoy autumn in our outstanding City of Austin.
