One of our members, Laraine has recently been appointed Trustee on the Board of Directors of American Youthworks, a Bill and Melinda Gates Innovative High School. The students of AYW have had tremendous life challenges ranging from family abuse and neglect, to drug issues and homelessness. Somehow, these young people have found their way to AYW, run by visionary leader, Richard Halpin. When you hear their stories first hand and see how education is changing lives, you cannot but be motivated to see what more can be done to help continue the amazing programs offered by AYW. These students are bright, motivated and finally have a dream – a dream of a job, a dream to go to college. These dreams are coming true through the work of American Youthworks. Every year, AYW wins national awards for their educational programs, too many to mention in this article. Go to www.americanyouthworks.org to get a more global overview of the school.

If you would like to hear more about this High School and how you might connect and make a difference in the life of a “young person of promise” become a volunteer.

Currently APIE has several opportunities available for anyone who would like to volunteer with us.

Literacy Study Groups team a volunteer with a small group of 1st and 2nd grade students to improve their fluency and vocabulary. Trained volunteer reading coaches listen to students read and assist with other reading-related activities.

College Readiness Study Groupsbreak out into small study groups divided by academic subject. Each volunteer works with one study group in a subject matter that is comfortable to the volunteer. Volunteers work collaboratively with students to understand the material and assignments.

21st Century After School Programs team volunteers with middle school students to help them with their homework after school for 45 minutes once a week.  The 21st Century programs were created to provide a safe, fun and positive environment on the school campus for students to get academic support and learn new things by going to after school enrichment classes.
